NILAI, July 11, 2018 – Tun Dato Seri Zaki Tun Azmi was appointed as Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) by YB Minister of Education for a period of three years from July 15, 2018 to July 14, 2021.
He is the former Chief Justice of Malaysia (from October 18, 2008 until September 9, 2011) who received his education from Lincoln’s Inn London and Barrister-at-Law (1969). With extensive experience in law in the government and private sectors, he started his career at the Attorney General’s Chambers and served there for 15 years with various positions before starting his career as an advocate and solicitor in one of the leading law firms in Kuala Lumpur.
With his extensive experience of 37 years in law, he was appointed as Federal Court Judge in 2007 and subsequently as the President of the Court of Appeal the same year before assuming the highest position as the Chief Justice.
After his retirement, Tun Zaki Azmi remains active in devoting his services to the nation and community with various important roles at both national and international levels. In the higher education arena, he is the Chancellor of Multimedia University (MMU) and Mahsa University and Chairman of the Board of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).
Tun Zaki Azmi is not new to USIM as he has contributed his experience and expertise to the academic program curriculum development at the Faculty of Shariah and Law (FSU) since 2011 when he was appointed as the Adjunct Professor in the faculty.
He was also a panel advisor for the Bachelor of Syariah and Law program during accreditation visit by the Legal Profession Board of Trustees in November 2013 and frequently shared his ideas through legal lectures to academic staff and students of FSU. At USIM’s 13th Convocation Ceremony in 2015, Tun Zaki Azmi was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Philosophy of Syariah and Judiciary as recognition of his great contribution to judicial and legal institutions.
University Management expresses his gratitude to the Ministry of Education and wishes to congratulate Tun Zaki Azmi for his appointment and is confident that he will continue to uphold USIM’s name and excellence. With his appointment, USIM now has two Pro-Chancellors namely YAM Tunku Besar Seri Menanti, Tunku Ali Redhauddin ibni Tuanku Muhriz and Tun Zaki Azmi.
The declaration of his appointment as Pro-Chancellor of USIM is expected to be completed by USIM’s Chancellor, DYMM Tunku Ampuan Besar Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Aishah Rohani binti Almarhum Tengku Besar Mahmud in November in conjunction with the 16th Convocation Ceremony of USIM.
